Dustland Fairytale by Sholio
ETA: It would probably help if I included the link, wouldn't it? Fixed.
Title: Dustland Fairytale
Artist:
sholio
Spoilers: Through the end of season 2
Characters: Neal, Kate, Peter, Fowler, Adler
Pairings: Neal/Kate
Warning: None
Summary: The story of Neal, Kate and Adler.
Why rec'd?: This vid is beautiful and heartbreaking. It's the story of of Neal and Kate, yes, but it's even more about how Neal saw their story. Even more, Sholio shows us that it's not just their story. Peter, Adler, and others weave themselves into the narrative, their presence inescapable.
If you like Neal/Kate, then this is a real treat because there's not much out there for them. If you're not a Neal/Kate fan, then this vid will make you buy the relationship. No, really, there are comments that say exactly that.
But I think the part the hits me hardest is the ending.
The way the vid ends on the scene where Neal and Kate finally get together is perfect and illuminates the tragedy far strongly than anything else could. Because this is the moment where everything feels right and anything is possible, and yet their beginning is also the end. It makes the tears well up every time.

And I especially appreciate your comments on the ending, because yes, that was exactly what I wanted to do there -- to leave it on that one perfect moment when everything is right and they have their whole lives to look forward to. Except we know what they don't, and it breaks my heart too.

AAAHHHHHH. I'd like to say that I can't believe I did that, but, no, I can totally believe it. That's absolutely something I would do.
I really wanted to to go on gushing about my various favorite bits, but I was having trouble making it work as a coherent review. But, you know, since you're here. Favorite bits:
"I saw the devil wrapping up his hands" paired with Fowler grinning through his bloody teeth. It's an unnerving scene in canon, but paired with the music like that, it's chilling.
"Don't you know the kingdom's under siege/And everybody needs you" with Neal confronting Fowler. It's like a punch to the gut every time. He's so lost without her. He needs her so much, and she's gone. Wah.
And once again, the ending. It bears repeating.

And thank you so much - again! That sequence to the "everybody needs you" part -- I waffled a lot while I was finishing up the vid on whether to put the Fowler scene there, or the final fight with Adler. I actually did a version each way, watched them both, and the Fowler scenes fit much better, both visually and thematically. Sometimes you just never know 'til you experiment a little ...
