Summary: AU in which Neal is sent back to prison for good and does what he must to survive. Part of that coping is giving up the ability to speak. Then, miraculously, Peter is able to get him his deal back and he is free. How does he get back to himself? Does he get his words back?

Why Rec'd? This story might be a legend in the fandom - at least it is to me. It was a long-running fill on collarkink that had its fans simultaneously despairing for Neal over his trauma and cheering whenever a new portion would be posted. When I learned that my friend hoosierbitch was its author, I should not have been so surprised - it bears her signature style of sensitively wrought depictions of the emotional pain and motivations of her characters,

There is not enough to be said about this fic, except that if you were following it on the meme, you will be satisifed to know there is a happy ending (sorry for the spoiler). You will cry, and then you will cry, and then you will smile and say, "AWW!" and then you will cry some more.

I will warn that there are some depictions of the` rape and other traumas Neal endures while in prison and they may be shocking to some.
