Title: Can You Handle This
Author: Pilgrimmi
Spoilers: Mild ones for 5x02
Characters: David Siegel, Neal, Peter
Pairings: none
Warning: none
Summary: The new handler has arrived. Neal Caffrey, meet David Siegel.

Why rec'd? This is a lovely little outside POV on Neal (and, to a lesser extent, the rest of Team White Collar) from Siegel's point of view.

Title: Be Worth It
Author: little purple butterflies
Spoilers: 1x02
Word Count: 3518
Characters: Reese Hughes (POV). Neal, Lauren and Peter appear (in voice only for latter two), Jones and other agents are mentioned in the background.
Pairings: Gen.
Summary: Normally Hughes was a good judge of character. With Neal though, Reese learned, there was more than meets the eye. Set during the scene in the park near the end of 1x02 'Threads'.

Why rec'd?: This really feels like Hughes and how he might think about Caffrey at this stage, with a mix of suspicion and maybe the start of grudging respect.
sholio: Neal from White Collar, hand on hat (WhiteCollar-Neal hat)

Title: The Wind Will Ruin Everything
Author: magistrate
Rating: T
Spoilers: through 4x04
Characters: Neal, general ensemble (mainly Ellen, Kate, Mozzie, Peter)
Pairings: mainly gen w/background Neal/Kate
Warning: n/a
Summary: Neal's left home a few times, in his life. Most of the time, though, he's blinked and home's been gone.

Why rec'd?: I read this story as a WIP; now that it's complete, I highly recommend it! Excellent Neal backstory/character study covering the period from his childhood up to early season four. In certain areas it conflicts with my own established headcanon, but it's a very solid, believable look at Neal's life, his emotional issues, and his ongoing search to find a place where he belongs.

Title: Parachutes
Author: qwertyfaced
Spoilers: Nothing specific
Characters: Peter, Neal, Mozzie, Elizabeth, Jones, Diana
Pairings: Gen, with brief, low-key Peter/El
Warning: None
Summary: Peter finds Neal's escape kit. This disturbs both of them.

Why rec'd? This was written for a prompt of mine and I think it's an excellent fic. It explores why Neal would need an escape kit in a way that feels very in character, and Peter's reaction to finding the kit is also very realistic. It is well written and reads like canon to me!

Title: Misfire (Also on DW)
Author: magistrate
Spoilers: Point Blank and a few things from Burke's Seven
Characters: Neal, Peter, Diana, Jones, Elizabeth
Pairings: only background canon ones
Warning: None
Summary: AU of Point Blank. A gun goes off, but Fowler isn't the one who catches the bullet.

Why rec'd? This fic just blew me away -- in the best possible way! I think that one of the main reasons it impressed me so much is because this scenario (Neal accidentally shoots Peter during the standoff in Point Blank) is one which could so VERY easily have been written in a way that was terribly OOC and very unfair to either Neal or Peter. And it could also have focused on these events to the extent of completely ignoring what happened to Mozzie later in the episode.

But this fic does not do that at all! Instead it's a wonderfully complex and believable alternate take on the episode's events and how this sends things spinning down a different path. The FBi reaction is plausible; Neal's reaction is plausible; everyone is fantastically in character and all the fallout feels believable and convincing. The author does not downplay or ignore either Peter or Neal's character flaws (actually I think that's one of the things I appreciated most about this fic, that it never feels like the author is taking sides or portraying either or both of the characters as paragons of virtue -- Neal's flaws are addressed, but so are the various ways in which Peter has let Neal down). And it neatly sidesteps most of the h/c cliches that one might expect to find here, which actually makes the emotions a great deal more wrenching and powerful than they might otherwise be, because the beats don't fall where you expect them to, and the characters don't do what we've been fanon-conditioned to expect them to, and it just makes your heart bleed for all of them.

This author is new to the fandom and I really hope they write more, because their take on the characters is just a little bit different without being at all OOC, and I love that!

Title: Paranoid Mozzie
Vidder: [livejournal.com profile] treonb
Song: "Everything You Know Is Wrong" by Chumbawamba
Spoilers: for the whole series to late season three
Characters: Mozzie, with appearances by the others
Pairings: none
Warning: none
Summary: "Paranoia is a skill."

Why rec'd? There aren't very many Mozzie vids out there (actually, I've hardly seen any) and this is a tremendously fun one with a perfect song!

Title: Chasing Clouds
Author: Slipstream77
Spoilers: Big ones for 3x16
Characters: Peter (with appearances by Diana, June)
Pairings: None
Warning: None
Summary: Peter knew Diana probably thought he was in shock. And maybe he was. But not for the reasons she thought. The immediate aftermath of "Judgment Day."

Why rec'd? This is a very convincing look at Peter right after the end of 3x16, trying to balance his need to do his job with his friendship for Neal, and reflecting on the tangled mess of events that have brought them here. I thought it was very fair to all the characters and the complexities of their situation.

Title: Vigil
Author: Amadi
Spoilers: None
Characters: June, Neal
Pairings: Gen
Warning: None
Summary: She keeps watch, because that's what she does, and what she expects.
Why rec'd?: This is an exquisite story. It's soft, quiet, and bittersweet. It's a beautiful look into June and her life.

(Mods, could we get a tag for friendship:june/neal?)

Spoilers:  Out Of The Box, episode 1x14
Characters:  Neal, Peter
Pairings: None
Warning:  None
Summary:  Neal is receiving strange messages. Who's sending them and what do they mean?
Why rec'd?  I am not very good at trying to describe why I am reccing something.  I will just say this story will pull you in untill the end.  I guess it is somewhat of a character study too.  A very beautiful, lyrical story.

Title: This Sea Town or That Bruising City
Author: lymricks
Spoilers: Through season 3
Characters: Neal, June, Alex, Kate, Mozzie, Elizabeth, Keller, Sara, Peter
Pairings: Gen, references to canon pairings
Warning: None
Summary: Neal wakes up in his pajamas on a beach far away from New York City, but everything's the same (except when it isn't).
Why rec'd? This fic is gorgeous. It's lyrical, soft, and gently surreal. Lymricks gets to the heart of the characters in a beautiful and surprising way. In all honesty, this fic never fails to make me cry. And bonus points for beautiful use of poetry. I decided to use the character study tag for this fic, but really it defies classification.

Title: I'm Still Here
Song: "I'm Still Here" from Treasure Planet
Artist: [livejournal.com profile] noiproksa
Spoilers: Through 3x10
Characters: Neal, Peter
Pairings: Gen
Warning: None
Summary: Neal character study, focused on his dilemma in season three and his friendship with Peter.

Why rec'd?: Like all of [livejournal.com profile] noiproksa's vids, this is just gorgeous - a wonderful look at the Neal-Peter friendship, and great editing with particularly skillful use of black-and-white vs. color to emphasize the emotional tone of the clips.

Mods: May I have a "genre:character study" tag, please? :)

Title: I Am Not A Damsel In Distress (and I have been fighting the good fight)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] elrhiarhodan
Spoilers: "Need to Know"
Characters: Diana, Charlie
Pairings: Background Diana/Christie and Diana/OFC, but mainly gen.
Warning: None
Word Count: ~6,000
Summary: Four things that Charlie taught Diana about life and how to live it.
Why rec'd? This is a beautiful Diana character study, told through her relationship with her bodyguard, Charlie. It's inspiring, heartbreaking, and touching. Most of all, it's a marvelous portrait of Diana and just why I love her.
